Born in Corop, Goulburn Valley, VIC in 1889 to Thomas Henry Dutton & Elizabeth Ann Powles

In 1915, he was a 25yo Carpenter & Joiner when he enlisted in the AIF on 8 Jan

He was allocated S/No.532 as Trooper with the 13th Light Horse Regiment, B Squadron

He embarked for service in the Middle East on 28 May & after a period of time training in Egypt, he embarked for Gallipoli, arriving at Anzac in Sep

He remained on the peninsula until the Allied Evacuation in Dec, arriving back in Egypt on 8 Jan 1916

He was promoted Corporal on 1 Feb & Sergeant on 9 Apr

Arriving in France in Jun 1916, the 13th Light Horse was re–designated as the I Anzac Corps Mounted (aka Light Horse) (aka Cavalry) Regiment

In Feb 1917 he was sent to England to attend a potential officer’s course which he successfully completed, subsequently being appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 2 Jun

Arriving back in France, he joined the 38th Battalion on 1 Jul & posted to C Company as commander of 10 Platoon (noted in the unit war diary)

He was promoted Lieutenant on 13 Sep 1917

He was recommended for the award of a Mention in Despatches on 16 Oct 1917 for "courage & devotion to duty" (noted in the unit war diary) – during the month, the battalion had fought in the Battles of Broodseinde & Passchendaele as part of the Third Battle of Ypres – this award seems not to have been followed through

Dutton was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his hand on 20 Apr 1918 though remained on duty

Some time later, he was re–allocated to Battalion Headquarters & appointed as both the units Scouting Officer & Lewis Gun Officer (noted in the unit war diary as Scout & L.G.O)

On 29 Aug 1918, the 38th Battalion was advancing from Monacu to Cléry–sur–Somme, east of Péronne & Mont Saint–Quentin when they came under a barrage of German artillery which killed Lieut Dutton

He was interred at Hem Farm Military Cemetery, Hem-Monacu. Plot II, Row C, Grave No. 3

George's brother, Tracy Hubert Dutton served in WW1 as S/No.12285 with the 10th Field Ambulance & in WW2 as V356458 in the 1st Field Ambulance VDC
