Biography

"DEATH OF COL. J. C. F. SLANE

The death occurred last night, after a long illness, of Colonel J. C. F. Slane, former commander of the 27th Battalion. Colonel Slane was 68. The funeral is taking place at the A.I.F. Cemetery, West terrace, this afternoon. Col. Slane began his military career in 1889 when he joined the Adelaide Rifles. In 1915 he left with the 27th Battalion in command of A Company. In Egypt he was promoted to major, saw service at Gallipoli and France, and was awarded the D.S.O. Toward the end of 1916 he took over the command of his battalion with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.

When he returned to Australia, Col. Slane was made commander of the 27th A.M.F., and later became commander of the 3rd Australian Brigade. The Premier (Mr. Playford) served as batman to Col. Slane at Gallipoli. With the death in Melbourne yesterday of Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfred Hosking, the 27th Battalion has lost two of its best known members. Colonel Hosking's burial will take place at the A.I.F. Cemetery, West terrace, tomorrow morning. The funeral will leave the R.S.L. Club in Angas street at 11 a.m." - from the Adelaide News 10 Apr 1942 (nla.gov.au)
