Died on this date – 22nd May……Alfred Breakell was born at Seymour, Victoria in 1889.
Mary Jane Breakell, mother of Alfred Breakell, died on 10th June, 1893 at Seymour, Victoria. His father - Thomas Breakell died on 5th December, 1897 at Benalla, Victoria.
On 17th August, 1914 Alfred Breakell enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 25 year old, single, Driver from 194 St. Leonard’s Road, Ascot Vale, Victoria.
Private Alfred Breakell, Service number 771, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Hororata (A20) on 19th October, 1914 with the 6th Infantry Battalion “G” Company & disembarked at Alexandria on 5th December, 1914.
He embarked from Alexandria on Galeka on 5th April, 1915 to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) – Gallipoli Campaign.
Private Alfred Breakell was wounded at Gallipoli Peninsula on 25th April, 1915. He was transferred to Hospital Ship at Dardanelles between 25th & 30th April, 1915 with a wounded right Knee (serious). Private Breakell was transferred to Hospital Ship Goorka on 3rd May, 1915 for England.
On 16th May, 1915 Private Breakell arrived in England.
Private Alfred Breakell died on 22nd May, 1915 at 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England from wounds received in action at the Dardanelles – G.S.W.(gunshot wound/s) to Knee. The Report of Death of a Soldier – Army Form B. 2090 recorded the cause of death as “Severe gunshot wound to right Knee”.
He was buried in Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, West Midlands, England. His name is remembered on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Screen Wall as he does not have a headstone.
