Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Captain Herbert Sydney Hatton (W31790) was a Permanent Soldier, enlisting in the Army in 1912, and serving as a Lieutenant in WWI (21 June 1917 - 28 October 1919) in France with 28th Infantry Battalion and as a Physical and Bayonet Fighting Instructor in Aldershot. In WWII, Lieutenant Hatton served in the ACMF (26 October 1940 - 9 October 1943), and was a Captain attached to 5 Garrison (WA) Battalion at Termination of Appointment.

Herbert was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1892, eldest of two children of Herbert Alfred Hatton (b1862 in Gloucestershire, England) and Mary (Polly) Ann Armstrong (b1864 in Dunedin, New Zealand). Herbert Snr started work in Gloucestershire as a Colliery Labourer, and was an Ironmonger in 1892 when he and Polly married in Otago, New Zealand. They moved to New South Wales, where Herbert Snr worked as a Traveller, Clerk and Shipping Merchant.

Herbert enlisted in the Army following graduation from Trinity College in London, and was in the Army all of his working life. In 1912, he was in Sydney as a 2nd Lieutenant with 24th Infantry (2nd Sydney) Battalion, and in 1916 in Sydney he married Jessie May Mackie (b1893 in Sydney, New South Wales). Following his return from WWI, Herbert and Jessie settled in Perth, where Herbert was attached to Department of Defence Physical Training Staff as a Supervisor. From the end of WWII, Herbert was Senior Investigating Officer with the Repatriation Department until retirement in 1956. Jessie died in 1955, and Herbert then joined his son Noel in Hobart, Tasmania, where he died in 1963.
