On 15 June 1917 at Khan Yumus in Palestine, Trooper Steele displayed great courage in saving lives of French comrades who were in danger of drowning. The Court of Enquiry noted that Trooper Steele was one of a number who behaved with great courage in risking their lives by swimming out and bringing in the men until themselves exhausted.
