James Johnston enlisted from Meekatharra in Western Australia but he had been born and raised in Strathbogie Victoria. An old gold rush town situated in a remote part of Western Australia, Meekatharra is a Yamatji word meaning "place of little water".
James was killed when a shell hit the trench he was in near Messines, killing him instantly and injuring some of his mates. He was buried in the field nearby but his grave was subsequently lost.
His younger brother, 5384 Pte Alexander Johnston, 23rd Battalion died of wounds inflicted at Bullecourt, 28 May 1917.
