William Cunningham was born in 1881 he had blue eyes, dark hair and a ‘fresh’ complexion. His religious denomination was Christian. At the age of 34 years and 1 month, he weighed 134lbs, was 5ft 6 ½ inches tall and had distinctive marks on both his upper arms. He lived in Adelaide, South Australia. His chosen next of kin was originally a woman known as Mrs Cleary, but it eventually became his friend Mrs Sylvia Gilbert. He enlisted on the 7th of December 1915 and was given the role of private. He was assigned into the 10th Battalion, but at the end of his service he was in the 27th Battalion. He embarked from Australia on the 28th of August 1916 n the HMAT A68 Anchises.
William Cunningham disembarked from Adelaide Plymouth on the 28th August 1916 and arrived in England on the 11th October. On the 17th of December the same year he went from Folkestone to France on the SS “Golden Eagle” to join the 27th Battalion. On the following day he marched in ex England in Etaples. 22nd December 1916, he proceeded to join the 27th Unit. He was taken on strength (added to what is assumed the Battalion) on New Year’s of 1917.
He was wounded in action on the 26th of March 1917 and admitted the same day to the Casualty Clearing Station (C.C.S.) in France. Then he embarked to England from Le Havre on the 16th of April 1917. He returned to Australia on the 27th of August 1917. He was officially discharged on the 21st of January 1918. William Cunningham served for a total of 2 years and 46 days; 1 year and 54 days of which was served overseas. William Cunningham remained a private for the whole duration of his service.
