Lance Corporal Melrose is shown as Gunner on the Motherwell War Memorial-[see ‘Overseas Forces’ on the names panel]

He was the son of Robert Melrose, Camp Street, Motherwell, near Glasgow, Scotland. He may have been related to Private John Melrose, Service Number 2611 who died 07/06/1917 whilst serving with the 36th Bn., Australian Infantry, A.I.F., both are commemorated on the Ypres [Menin Gate] Memorial in Belgium [official Point of Commemoration] and on the Motherwell War Memorial in Scotland. Both had connections with Taree, New South Wales.

He enlisted on 23 December 1915

His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A24 Benalla on 1 May 1916-he was 26 at that date.
