Rev. Edward Nye

31 YEARS AS CHAPLAIN
Rev. Edward Nye

Thousands of past and present pupils of Wesley College remember with warm affection and esteem the kindly personality who has been chaplain at the college for 31 years, and who, at the end of this school year, has retired from the post he has filled with such zeal and understanding for so long. Rev. Edward Nye's association with Wesley dates back to 1884, when he Joined the school as a pupil— and a brilliant one, as it proved, for he had an enviable scholastic record. After graduating in arts at the Melbourne University, he entered the ministry, and worked in various circuits in Victoria and Tasmania, as his father, the late Rev. E. Wason Nye, had done before him, till 1900, when he was appointed chaplain at Wesley. Since then there have been only two breaks in his long record of service as college chaplain during the war he was chaplain at No. 1 Aus. General Hospital in Egypt; and in 1925 he took over the organisation of the Debt Reduction Fund, founded to mark the college's diamond jubilee in the following year. On three occasions, in 1912, 1921 and 1926, Mr. Nye shouldered the duties of acting head master, when the late head master, Mr. L. A. Adamson. was on lease of absence. He also took classes in Latin, French and mathematics from time to time; the editing of the Wesley College "Chronicle" was another phase of his activities, and in 1921 he was president of the Old Wesley Collegians' Association. He goes into retirement with the deep regret of all those associated with the college — and the warm friendship and regard of the many more who have come Into contact with him during his long and valuable service to the State in educational and ministerial spheres
