Walter William DUMBRELL was born in Sydney on 31st July, 1883
His parents were David DUMBRELL & Jane BLAKE who married in Sydney in 1879
He married Grace Lily EVANS on 12th May, 1913 in Queensland & had one son, Walter David DUMBRELL born 30th July, 1914
His son Walter David served in the Army during WW2 (SN Q113408) and was discharged in 1945

Walter Dumbrell was involved in the attacks at Messines Ridge as support carrying ammunition and stores forward to the assaulting force. He reported in a postcard following the attacks that he was affected by gas but this is not verified in his military record.
An amendment to the information which appears in the Australian War Memorial's studio portrait page (www.awm.gov.au) - is that Walter DUMBRELL was a constable in the Queensland Police Force.
He was sworn in on 04 May 1910 and served at Rockhampton, Banana and Many Peaks until his war service commenced.
He was married with a young child at the time of his death.
"...348 Sergeant Walter William Dumbrell, 41st Battalion, of Rockhampton, Qld. Dumbrell had previously served in the Boer War, making his own way to Cape Town at the age of 17 when his parents refused their consent for him to enlist. Upon arrival in South Africa he told officials he was 21 and enlisted as a private with the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen's Contingent. Returning to Australia, he became a (police) constable... Dumbrell enlisted with the AIF on 18 September 1915, embarking with the 41st Battalion from Sydney aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 18 May 1916. Sgt Dumbrell was killed by shellfire while in a trench north of the Corbie road, France on 19 April 1918, aged 33." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
