1928 - SENIOR MASTER HONORED
During last Week Mr. L Easton, senior master at the Mudgee High School, received word from London that he had been elected a Fellow of the Royal Economical Society of London for literary work and research work. The Royal Economic Society was founded by Royal Charter in 1902, but it was really formed as the Economics Association about 20 years before. Its aims are the advancement of education generally and the advancement of economic knowledge. The collegues and many friends of Mr Easton congratulate him and express their great pleasure on hearing that meritorious service to the community has at last bee rewarded.
Mr. Easton, who is recognised as one of the most efficient commercial masters in the high school service has had sixteen years of excellent service in the Education Department. He entered the service in 1912 and spent some years in charge of small country schools. then in the early years of the war he was transferred to Randwick Intermediate High School in charge of the commerical work there.
The call to arms was too strong and in spite of his family ties we find him joining the A.I.F. from which he was discharged medically unfit some two years later.
After regaining his strength, Mr Easton took up the subject of commerical education, and since then he has done remarkable work in that direction. He wrote several very important text books on business principles and practice. He became lecturer and examiner in business subjects to State school teachers in Sydney. He was also the head teacher of correspondence book-keeping at the Sydney Techinical College.
He also worked assiduously on beahlf of his colleagues. He was the treasurer of the N.S.W.P.S. Teachers' Federation for the first two years and was one of the original signatories at its formation. Later he became the president of the Assistant Teachers' Association, and its representative on the Arbitration Committee.
Perhaps his greatest achivement was the excellent manner in which he discharged his duties as accountant for the Influenza Relief Committee in 1919.
Hi activities in the Mudgee district need no comment. It is a matter of common knowledge that he was responsible for the reorganisation of the Mudgee Town Band, and the consolidation of its finances. He is a senior vicepresicent of the Mudgee branch of the Teachers' Federation. He occupies the position of Hon. Secretary to the local Chamber of Commerce and the New Settlers' Leauge, He also founded the Mudgee anzac and Armistice Association, of which he is the first president.
Mr. Easton has been commercial master at Kempsey, Goulburn and Mudgee High Schools.
