th Light Horse
Elias was the son of Martin and Bridget McDonnell [nee Crowley].Upon
completing basic training, Elias left Adelaide on HMAT A19 Afric on 26 May
1915 and fought at Gallipoli from 5 August. He was wounded in action on 5
September, being treated for a gunshot wound at Heliopolis Hospital. On 6
November Elias was treated for a septic thumb at the Australian General
Hospital at Gezira, Cairo, Egypt, rejoining his unit on 18 January 1916. Six
weeks later he was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at
Heliopolis with influenza.
Elias was transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment on 6 March. He was
hospitalised with heart strain from 23 March to 5 July at the Military Hospital
at Ras-el-tin, Alexandria. As a result, Elias was returned to Australia on the
Karoola on 5 July and was discharged as medically unfit on 12 October.
