Son of John Frederick William Urbahns and Lily Anne Urbahns nee McClure of 'Yeronga Vale', Winchelsea, Victoria.

9 October 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria, with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade with the rank of Gunner.

17 October 1917 - transferred to the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column

18 October 1917 - transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade

1 April 1918 - wounded in action. Embarked for England aboard HS Newhaven on 9 April 1918 with wound to the scalp. 

12 March 1919 - transferred to AIF Headquarters.

21 November 1918 - awarded Military Medal.  Citation reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty the attack by 2nd American Corps on St. Souplet sector on 17 October 1917. Just prior to the barrage and immediately after Zero the 37th Battery was subject to a heavy bombardment. This Gunner was the only unwounded member of his gun detachment but he managed his gun alone during a considerable portion of the barrage. By his fearless and determination he set a fine example to the remaining detachments who had also been depleted by casualties. London Gazette on
