1040 Private (Pte) Herbert Flack, 38th Battalion. A labourer from Ballarat East, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Flack embarked with C Company from Melbourne on HMAT Runic on 20 June 1916. Later transferring to the 6th Battalion, he was gassed whilst serving in France. Following the Armistice he was granted indefinite leave to remain in England to marry and was demobilised on 16 October 1919. Along with his wife, he returned to Australia on 19 June 1920. - Trove
