The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 19th name inscribed is Private John McKinnon.

On the 18th March 1975, Private John McKinnon, referred to as Jock or Jack, 31st Battalion (Reg No-2159), single labourer from Newtown, Minmi, New South Wales and Whitburn Street, Greta, N.S.W. (1916), father of three-(Mona, Hazel, Elaine), died age 81 years 9 months, and was laid to rest at East Ballina Cemetery, N.S.W., date unknown. UNITING SECTION, Row 11, Grave 5.

Born at Greta, New South Wales on the 16th June 1893 to Hugh, died 10.7.1920, Minmi, N.S.W., age 70, buried at Minmi Cemetery, Left Hand Side, Section 16, Plot 022, and Eliza McKinnon, died tragically, 29.8.1910, Minmi, age 42, mother of 5, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, Left Hand Side, Section 16, Plot 022, husband of Isabel McKinnon nee?, married?, died?

Jock enlisted on the 20th September 1915, age 22 years 3 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 18th February 1916.

Wounded in action - 19.7.1916 (shell shock, seriously ill, Battle of Fromelles).

Admitted to hospital 25.7.1916.

Commenced return to Australia 9.9.1916.

Jock arrived home on the 28th October 1916, being discharged medically unfit (shell shock) on the 29th December 1916.

Mr. McKinnon’s name has also been inscribed on the Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour and the Greta Soldiers' Obelisk as Mackinnon. Name possibly inscribed on the Weston Independent Order of Rechabites Tent No-94 Roll of Honour.

Older brother William McKinnon, born 15.6.1887, Greta, New South Wales, married miner from Whitburn Street, Greta, New South Wales, enlisted 20.9.1915, Newcastle, N.S.W., 31st Battalion, Reg No-2154, age 28 years 3 months, unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 18th February 1916, wounded in action - 19.7.1916 (GSW left forearm, severe, Battle of Fromelles), admitted to hospital 13.7.1917 (tachycardia & trench fever), RTA 7.3.1918, discharged medically unfit 6.4.1918, died 21.5.1966, Greta, N.S.W., age 78 years 11 months, name inscribed on the Greta Soldiers' Obelisk as Mackinnon, ashes interred Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., date unknown, not officially commemorated.
