62 years ago today, on the 3rd February 1960, Corporal John Robert Middlemas Hanington, 35th Battalion (Reg No-94), labourer from High Street, Cessnock, New South Wales and Lambton Road, Charlestown, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. ANGLICAN 3-175. 11.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 22nd April 1897 to James Hall and Isabella Hanington of Allandale Road, Cessnock, N.S.W.; husband of Katherine Mary Mahala Hanington nee Stuart (married 3.2.1919 at The Parish Church, Withycombe, Raleigh, United Kingdom, died 1947, sleeping here), John enlisted November 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 1.7.1917 (sprained ankle), 9.9.1917 (sprained ankle).

John returned home September 1919 with wife Katherine, being discharged on the 22nd November 1919.

Mr. Hanington’s name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial (photos courtesy of David Harrower, unveiled on the 11th November 2015, 1696 names inscribed) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Deceased 1.2.1960 (CWGC).
