William Charles Grey was born 27th March 1875 at Balaklava, South Australia. He was son of Mr C S Grey. He was educated at Prince Alfred College. Grey went on to the University of Adelaide to study medicine from 1894-1898 but his university study was interrupted. It was reported at his death that he was a veteran of the South African War and this may have been the cause of the delay in his studies.  There is no record in the National Archives of Australia of him enlisting in the Boer War. Nevertheless he continued his medical studies at the University of Adelaide and went on to complete them at Sydney in 1901, likely as a result of the Adelaide Hospital Row.  Grey was in Western Australia in 1903 and appointed public vaccinator in Bulong, a now abandoned gold field town. He and his wife, Louise Fanny, had a son in 1905, in Boulder City Kalgoorlie, WA. However, in 1911 he was in Rookwood, Western Sydney, NSW where he had started a medical practice and living at “Bonarty” Victoria Ave Rookwood, Lidcombe NSW

Grey enlisted in the AIF on 24th November 1914 in 2MD and left Australia on the Kyarra on 28th November 1914.  He was 39 years old, 5ft 8ins tall, and weighed 15st 7lbs.  He was appointed major with 2 AGH on enlistment. He was then seconded for duty as CO Mena Convalescent Depot. Grey was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 1st January 1916 and took command of the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital. He was in hospital at Ras et Tin in July 1916. His service commitment was completed in November 1916 and was returned to Australia on the Wiltshire with his appointment terminated on the 17th January 1917. He was issued with the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

After Grey returned to Australia he resumed his medical practice in Rookwood, NSW. Later he moved to 57 Dudley Street, Lidcombe. William Charles Grey died on 12th March 1930 in Lidcombe.
