70 years ago today, on the Saturday morning of the 8th May 1954, Sapper Alfred Ernest Ford, 2nd Australian Light Railway Operating Company (Reg Nos. 850 & 1946), driller & labourer in railway shops from 53 off Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and Victoria Street, Argenton, N.S.W., father of two (Netta and Melvie), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. BAPTIST-G NW. 11.

Born at East Maitland, New South Wales on the 4th March 1889 to James and Susannah Ford; husband of Emily May Ford nee Alder (married 1911, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 31.8.1944, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 53, sleeping here), from 53 off Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, Alf enlisted on the 26th August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion at Randwick, N.S.W.
Did not embark (reason not stated).

Reenlisted 17.1.1917, (Railway Unit, Section 5, Reinforcements and Special Draft-February 1917 to October 1918) Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on the 11th May 1917.

Admitted to hospital 26.2.1918 (trench fever), 6.2.1919 (influenza).

Granted furlough in England from 20.3.1918 to 3.4.1918 & 19.1.1919 to 3.2.1919.

Commenced return to Australia 5.4.1919.

Admitted to ship's hospital at sea 12.4.1919 (scabies).

Alf arrived home on the 20th May 1919, being discharged on the 19th June 1919.

Mr. Ford’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Alf’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
