Enlisted as Private 1787 Kennedy Regiment 2nd Australian Navy and Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF).
Enlisted Cairns: 8th August 1914, embarked for Port Moresby from Townsville via Thursday Island (War Station) to capture German New Guinea. Returned to Townsville due to “stokers strike” on troopship TSS Kanowna (censored at the time). These “Dirty 500” honoured in centenary tribute Nth Qld in August 2014.
Discharged: Townsville, 18th September , 1914
Re-enlisted 17th September, 1914, Townsville
Stationed Enoggera, Brisbane.
Promoted to Corporal 1st December 1914.
Left Melbourne on A40 (Ceramic) 22nd December for Egypt
Bertram Hare, landed Gallipoli, 25th April 1915
Transferred to Hospital 30th July 1915
Hospitalised Ghezireh, Mena, Helouan, Egypt.
Returned to Australia 9th February 1916, on “Nestor, escort duty and promoted to Company Sergeant, 26th April 1916.
Appointed Recruitment officer. Discharged 1919.
