Biography contributed by Saint Ignatius' College

Jacob Sidney Grigg was born on 1890 the 18th of August in Beaufort, South Australia.

Jacob's occupation was a farmer before enlisting to the war. Jacob did not attend any previous military services except for the basic training camp where they were taught physical fitness exercises, learning how to march and follow commands, and basic understanding of how to use their weapons. Jacob had a large family; in fact, he was one of thirteen children from parents Jacob Grigg and Caroline Parkyn his siblings being, Abraham Grigg, Grace Parkyn Grigg, William Parkyn Grigg, James Grigg, Jacob Grigg, Fanny Grigg, Caroline Grigg, Marry Ann Grigg, Joseph Grigg, Edwin john Grigg, Isaac Grigg, Martha Alice Grigg and Albert Nicholas Grigg.

Life in service

Jacob enlisted on the 2 February 1915 and his Unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A2 Geelong on 31 May 1915. He served both on Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Jacob got sick twice while he was at war. Once on the 12-4-16 from the flu and the other he was sick for the mumps on the 7-1-17. On the first occasion he was only sick for three days, however when he got the mumps he was in hospital for 7 days returning for service on the 14th of January 1917. Jacob was thankfully not killed in war however Jacob was wounded twice. The first time being on 30-6-16 in France. He was hit by shrapnel in the upper back shattering some of his scapula, which is placed just below the trapezium and to the left of his deltoids. Because of this Jacob was sent to a hospital in Boulogne called Center Médecine Nucléaire. On the second occasion Jacob was not so lucky as on the 7-2-17 he was shot in the knee and was not capable of any moment in that leg. After extensive treatment he could not return to duty and was sent home in September 1917 for discharge.

After war

Jacob returned due to his horrible encounter with a gunshot towards his right knee. He returned to his friends and family in Adelaide. Once being Home, he still lived with his parents in Beaufort, South Australia. Sadly, by this time 2 of his siblings passed away, Isaac and marry Ann Grigg. Jacob returned home and became a farmer just like he was before he left for war.
