John Bryden was a barman working at the Cornucopia Hotel, Wallaroo, prior to enlistment.
He enlisted on 11 January 1916 at the age of 21.
John applied for a discharge for personal reasons as his widowed mother had advised she was ailing under the stress of running the business without help and the livelihood of herself and her other children - his three sisters, the eldest being 15 years old - depended on that income. John Bryden’s presence was necessary to save and maintain this business for the welfare of his mother.
His service record attests that having joined his Battalion on 8/8/1916 he had been with it ever since, except for 10 days leave. It states; " He is of exemplary character and has done his full share of work during his time with the AIF. He has never asked for his return to Australia, but contrary to his wishes feels it is his duty to do so. The initiative was taken by his mother. His father and two brothers have died during the war."
He returned to Australia on the 10th January 1918 and discharged on 19 March 1918.
He was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal for his time served.
