Died on this date – 6th December…… Joseph Edwin Cook was born in Laidley, Queensland on 1st June, 1880.

His father - Joseph Wyatt Cook died on 30th September, 1895 at Laidley, Queensland.

On 29th February, 1916 Joseph Edwin Cook enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 35 year old*, single, Farmer from Thornton, Laidley, Queensland.

(Note: The Embarkation Roll has Joseph Edwin Cook’s age listed as 25. The first page of his Attestation Paper has his age typed as 25 years & 8 months, however page 3 has his age handwritten as 35 years & 8 months)

Private Joseph Edwin Cook, Service number 1818, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on H.M.A.T. Boorara  (A42) on 16th August, 1916 with the 42nd Infantry Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 13th October, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. These were located in the Salisbury Plain area in the county of Wiltshire.

He was marched into No. 3 Command Depot on 14th November, 1916.  On 17th November, 1916  Private Cook was marched out to 3rd Amalgamated Training Battalion, (also listed as 11th Training Battalion), Hurdcott, Wiltshire.

Private Joseph Edwin Cook died at 2 a.m. on 6th December, 1916 at Military Hospital at Fovant, Wiltshire of Broncho Pneumonia.

He was buried in Compton Chamberlayne War Graves Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 27 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
