Son of John Henry Codling and Sarah (nee Wheaton) Codling; brother of John William Codling, Henry Wheaton Codling, Roy Nataniel Codling, Gladys Maud Codling, Sydney James Codling and Linda May Codling.
Brothers who also served were: - Sydney James Codling who was killed in action on 23 July 1916 while serving with the 10th Battalion and Roy Nathaniel Codling who returned to Australia on 25 November 1919 having served with the 11 Field artillery Brigade
