Gilbert Vita Barrow Montefiore

Born Woollahra, NSW in 1887, Gilbert was the son of George Frederick Barrow Montefiore (1850-1889) and Dorothy Frances (Dora) nee Fuller (1851-1933). George, Gilbert's father had died at sea when Gilbert was aged 5 or 6. His mother was a notable suffragist, socialist, poet and biographer.

By 1910 Gilbert had become an engineer and had settled in Sidney; around 1912 he married Dora Jean Allan and they went on to have 4 children together.

In 1917 Gilbert enlisted and his enlistment details were:

Service Number: 14271
Rank: Mechanical Transport Driver
Roll title: 9 ASC 17 Divisional Supply Column 300 Company (MT [Mechanical Transport]) - 14 to 16 and Monthly Rei
Conflict / Operation: First World War, 1914-1918
Date of embarkation: 10 May 1917
Place of embarkation: Melbourne

During his service in the Australian Imperial Force Gilbert was severely gassed although he wasn't discharged from military service until 1 Jul 1919. Less than two years later, on 18 Jun 1921, Gilbert died.

Subsequently it appears that members of the family changed their names to Montrose (it is suggested that this was due to anti-Semitism). Gilbert's widow Dora Jean Allan (Montefiore) Montrose died 10 April 1941
