Prisoner of War

Taken prisoner in July 1916 when 54th Battalion were involved in teh Battle of the Somme near Fromelles. Captured after being injured near German lines and taken to Fredricksfield Prison Camp where he stayed until the end of hostilities in November 1918. Taken prisoner at Fleurbaix on the Somme on 20 July 1916, taken to Friedrichsfeld POW Camp for duration of the War. Released and repatriated back to England on 6 Dec 1919.

After returning from the War Alex married Agnes Hilda Jesperson, the daughter of  Edward Walter Jesperson, 17th Battalion AIF who was killed at the battle of Lagnicourt, Arras 15 April, 1917.

 

Alex and Agnes had five children.  Alex worked as a surveyor with Dept Main Roads and was involved with the construction of the Princes Highway.  They lived for many years at Dignam's Creek near Bermaguie on the South Coast of NSW before moving to Yagoona, a suburub of Sydney.

 

Alex Duff died in 1968 and is buriied at Rookwood Cemetry in Sydney.
