Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Les Charles was one of a family of fourteen children, the parents being John and Phoebe Charles of Inglewood, Queensland. The father, John, died in 1909, and the mother, Phoebe, passed away in early 1916. Les was killed in action during the first battle of the 31st Battalion at Fromelles on 20 July 1916. He was buried by the Reverend Meredith Holliday, chaplain of the 56th Battalion. His medals and effects went to a sister, Phoebe Mary Charles of Inglewood.

His brother, 4686 Pte. James Henry Charles 25th Battalion AIF was killed in action only a few months later on 14 November 1916, aged 26.

Other brothers 165 Pte. Thomas Denis Charles 31st Battalion and 156 Pte. David Samuel Charles 31st Battalion both enlisted with Leslie and returned to Australia safely.
