Frank Douglas Craig South was born on 23rd July 1899 in Port Pirie, South Australia. He is the son of Alfred Edward South and Margaret Almetta Anderson. He had three brothers who also served in the army during World War 1. South was unmarried before he joined the war.

Frank lived in Port Pirie his whole life and worked as a farmer until he enlisted on the 12th January, 1917. He enlisted at the age of 18 as part of the AIF's 50th Battalion. He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A48 Seang Bee on 10th February 1917.

On the 26th April, 1918, South was wounded in action. He was reported sick and was transferred through a hospital. His parents were notified of this by letter on the 13th May 1918. South continued to fight after he was wounded.

South was killed in action on 16th August, 1918 in Villers-Bretonneux, France. His body was buried in Heath Cemetery (Plot VII, Row A, Grave No. 6), Harbonnieres, France. He died at the age of 20.

South was awarded the Victory medal for his support to the AIF. This was conferred by the Officer in Charge of Base Records, Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, Victoria on May 15, 1923. South is also remmebered by a memorial plaque conferred by the Officer in Charge at Base Records, Victoria Barracks, Melbourne Victoria on (month unknown) 17, 1922.
