Vincent Norman McCaffrey was born on October 11, 1896, in Goolwa, South Australia. He was the son of Bernard Ambrose McCaffrey and Winifred Mary Monica, née Stephens. Vincent spent his childhood in the schoolhouse in Mylor, SA.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on August 3, 1915, at just 18 years old and single. He joined the 10th Infantry Battalion in Adelaide, and after several months, of training he embarked for overseas service on January 11, 1916 on HMAT Borda from Adelaide. He brother Cyril also served in WW1.

According to his service record, on the 26th of February 1916, he was transferred to the 50th Battalion. He was taken on strength in Tel el Kabir on 29th February 1916. He was admitted to hosptial 21st April 1916 with haemorrhoids and then was ill with influenza in May 1916. He was discharged to duty 19th May 1916. He preceeded to the Western Front in France disembarking 2nd June 1916.

Unfortunately, on August 16, 1916, while in combat in France, McCaffrey was shot in the right hand, after initial treatment in France he was transferred to Graylingwell War Hospital, West Sussex. There, he received care and started his recovery. He took two weeks leave in October 1916 and then marched in to depot in Perham Downs. 

In September he was hospitalised again with haemorrhoids in July 1917. After treatment he was at base at Tidworth. In November 1917 he was treated for an absess in his knee. He served the remaineder of the war in English depots and continued to be treated for haemorrhoids during 1918

Vincent arrived back in Australia on 5 April 1919 and was discharged 20 May 1919.

After the war Vincent married Anne and had two children, Des, Mary and Clodagh.
