Joseph Birtie Martin was born in 1887 in Carlisle, Cumbria in England, he eventually moved to Australia where he then enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on June 23, 1915. Four months later, he left from Adelaide and boarded the HMAT Themistocles on October 13, 1915.
