Eldest of three brothers to serve in WWI, Private Edward Harcourt Hitchin (Service No:113) enlisted in the AIF on 30 June 1915, serving with the 32nd Infantry Battalion in the Middle East and on the Western Front. Private Hitchin was Discharged as Medically Unfit on 6 August 1917.
Ted was born in Edwardstown, South Australia in 1885, fifth of ten children of William Hitchin (b1850 in Goodwood, South Australia) and Jane Elizabeth Inglis (b1853 in London, England) - Jane arrived in Port Adelaide in 1855 with her parents and siblings on board the Caroline. William was working as a Labourer in Goodwood in 1912 when he and Jane married in Hindmarsh, where they settled and raised their family before moving to Edwardstown where William was a Farmer, In the late 1890s William and Jane settled in Adelaide, where William worked as a Woolscourer for Messrs GH Mitchell & Sons.
Ted started work as a Labourer in Hindmarsh, and in 1912 at Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, he married Margaret Creasy (b1886 at Stanley Flat, Clare, South Australia). Ted worked as a Cook and in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, was a Baker at Millicent via Mt Gambier in South Australia. Ted died in 1951 and Margaret in 1977.
