Son of William Pitt Vance and Mary Salome Vance nee Kennedy of Barrine, Cairns, QLD. Brother of Stanley Kendall Vance who returned to Australia on 11 June 1919 having served with the 47th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 17 March 1919 aboard HT Plassy as wounded disembarking on 30 April  1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane
