Son of Robert Gilchrist and Marian Hardie Gilchrist nee Allan of 34 Berkerley Street, Hawthorn, Victoria.

Brother of Harold Gilchrist who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 6th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate Ypres;  Robert Bruce Gilchrist who returned to Australia on 8 September 1918 having served with the 58th Battlion; Andrew Hardie Gilchrist who returned to Australia on 4 January 1919 as ship was recalled while serving with the 10th General Service Reinforcements

In 1934c Arthur married Mabel G. Timms in Corowa, NSW

Disembarked at Sydney on 28 November for onward travel to Melbourne aboard Riverina after troopship was recalled
