Biography contributed by Saint Ignatius' College

Monomy Clem Hill, born in approximately December 1894. Monomy grew up in Cherry Gardens South Australia with his mother, Susan Hill, Father and older sister Dahlia Hill. His house was fairly small but could accommodate his family. Monomy enjoyed his childhood. It was full of adventure, love, and faith. He grew up with chickens and a cat. He attended school in his childhood up to grade six, and later became a labourer. Monomy involved himself in religion which he was very passionate about: he attended a Methodist church in Adelaide and all his family members would join him as well. He had a pale complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair and was five feet and six and a half inches.

Monomy enlisted in the 10th Battalion on 11 August 1915. He embarked from Adelaide on 2 December 1915. After a short while training in Egypt, the battalion then sailed to the western front. Monomy fought at Pozieres in July and August and suffered from shell shock. He returned to duty in October 1916. He was wounded for the second time at Ypres on 1 October 1917, this time by German shelling. This wound was very severe and meant he returned to Australia early in 1918.
