Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

John Joseph BOURKE (Service Number 93), was born at Uralla on 24 April 1888. He began working for the NSW Railways as a cleaner at Narrabri West Locomotive Depot early in 1912 and a year later had progressed to fireman. On 20 August 1914, immediately after the outbreak of the war he joined the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Forces.
He embarked from Sydney on 20 October 1920 on HMAT ‘Star of Victoria’, and served in the 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment. The Light Horse fought at the Dardanelles as infantry and Bourke was killed in action at there on 28 June 1915.
He is buried in the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, about 400 yards S.E. of Anzac Cove.
