Second Lieutenant (Lt) Roy Victor "Butcher" Cutler, 2nd Field Company Engineers, of Elsternwick, Vic. An architect prior to enlistment on 26 August 1914, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Orvieto on 21 October 1914. On February 1915 he was promoted to lieutenant and captain on 26 July 1915. He was promoted to the rank of major on 5 March 1916 with the 4th Field Company Engineers. For his devotion to duty and conspicuous courage in laying tunnel charges against Turkish barricades at Russells Top, Anzac Cove in November 1915, Captain Cutler was awarded the Military Cross which was gazetted on 21 September 1916. Major (Maj) Cutler commanded the 4th Field Company Engineers during 1916 - 1917 and 2nd Field Company Engineers in 1918 to 1919. Maj Cutler became a Member of the Order of the British Empire on 23 July 1919. He returned to Australia with 1st Division Engineers on 4 March 1919. He was later commissioned into the Indian Army. This is one of a series of images from the collection of 22 Driver (Dvr) George Ewings Pentland, 2nd Field Company Engineers, of Traralgon, Vic. Pentland enlisted on 31 August 1914 as a driver with 2nd Field Company Engineers, and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Orvieto on 21 October 1914. Pentland served at Gallipoli and later in France where he was promoted to sergeant. On 26 August 1916 he was awarded the Bronze Medal for Military Valour (Italy) at Pozieres. In April 1917 he was transferred to the 4th Australian Pioneers as a lieutenant and in June 1917 was awarded the Military Cross for his actions at Messines. He returned to Australia on 4 January 1919.
