WILLIAM TRAVERS JONES
WILLIAM TRAVERS JONES (1895-1983) born at Tumorroma, son of William and Clara Jones nee Withers. William enlisted to serve in WW1 as Private 3648, 35th Battalion, on July 1st, 1917 at Orange, with the 6-10 Reinforcements. He sailed from Sydney on the HMAT Militades A 28 on August 2nd, 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal On April 13th, 1918, and served with the 53rd, and 35th Battalions, and was sent to the Corps Gas School for a weeks training. He saw action on the Western Front in France and was wounded by a shell shot in the left shoulder during his involvement with the bitter trench warfare in September. He was then sent to England for treatment at Weymouth. The family at home received telegrams to inform them of the injury and his progress. The remnants of his Battalion left for home on board the Khyber March 31st, 1919 and arrived home on May 15th. He was discharged at Sydney on August 2nd, medically unfit. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
