Jack Lapthorne was awarded a Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry during the Battle of Menin Road when he captured three German concrete pill boxes together with seventeen prisoners and two machine guns. 'His many acts of daring were most inspiring to the men'. Jack returned to South Australia during mid 1919.

His two brothers, 1822 Pte Reuben Graham Lapthorne, 27th Battalion, died of wounds inflicted at Gallipoli 13 October 1915 and 3278 Corporal Thomas Frank Lapthorne, 48th Battalion was killed in action in France 18 September 1918.
