Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

107 years ago today, on the 3rd April 1918, Private Edward John Bounds, also known as Ted and Bounzie, 34th Battalion (Lewis gunner, Reg No- 1797A), milk carter from 97 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was Killed in Action by an enemy artillery shell fragment to head, Hangard Wood, Northern France, age 25.

No Roll of Honour circular submitted.

Born at Dundee, New South Wales on the 3rd September 1892 to Thomas Mitchell (died 13.5.1922, 65 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., age 71, buried at ANGLICAN 1-28.126, no memorial inscription, poppies to be placed here), and Mary Ann Bounds nee Doud (died 23.10.1927, Hamilton, N.S.W., age?, mother of 9?, sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-13. 41), from 65 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales (1921) and 40 Donald Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. (1923), Ted enlisted on the 17th April 1916, Reg No-1797, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on the 4th September 1916.

Re-allotted Reg No-1797A 26.2.1917.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (gassed, Battle of Messines).

Admitted to hospital 8.6.1917 (suffocation, poison gas).

Mr. Bounds is resting at Crucifix Corner Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. Plot III Row C Grave 6.
Place of Association - Cooks Hill, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Ted’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Gardner Memorial.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Bounds gravesite in remembrance of Ted’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-13. 41.
