Eldest son of Mr. Robert W and A West, of 'Melville' Washington Street, West Kogarah, NSW, he was educated at the Kogarah and Fort Street Schools.  He joined the clerical department of the Sydney Morning Herald at the beginning of 1915.

In April 1916, he enlisted and was posted to the reinforcements of the 4th Battalion, but, on account of his father's death was released from service.  He volunteered again in March, 1918, and left Australia with the reinforcements for the 13th Battalion, arriving in France in the October.  He was in Amiens sector when the armistice was signed.
