Queensland Times Newspaper
I found a newspaper story in The Queensland Times, dated in 1917, from Don's best mate SGT Edward "Sonny" McCabe Service# 4518, 25th Battalion AIF. SGT McCabe served in both the Boer War and the First World War.
It reads, "I have just come out of the trenches and am in a rest camp for a few days. I do not get a chance to write much now. It is very rough over here, with the cold and snow and rain.
It is with regret I have to tell you of poor old Don Jeffrey. Poor Don! I was with him when he was killed, and he asked me to write home and tell them. I buried Don. His mates and I made a nice little cross and put it on his grave. Don was my best mate and a good fellow...
I haven't much to say - only war, I wish I was back in old Ipswich again." etc
