Upon enlisting, Hugh served as a private with E Coy and was then transferred to the 50th Battalion 7th reinforcement. His unit embarked HMAT A19 Afric from Adelaide on 7 November 1916, disembarking at Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917. They were sent to France on 13 March, where they were marched into Etaples on 17 March.
During fighting at Noreuil on 2 April, Hugh was killed in action and was buried at the Noreuil Australian Cemetery, Picardie, France. In 1922 his parents received Hugh’s Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll, 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Hugh’s Death Notice appears in his NAA service record: “THOMPSON, Pte. Hugh Robert, 2991, 50th Btn.Australian Inf. Killed in action 2nd April, 1917. Age 20. Son of John Brown Thompson and Eva Edith Thompson, of Northfield, South Australia.”

Hugh Robert Thompson was born at Forestville South Australia before he joined the military service. He was a farmer who used to live at Northville South Australia.
He was not married nor had a girlfriend.
His religion was Church of England.
His mother’s name was Mrs Edith Eva Thompson, and his father was John Brown. He joined the military’s 80th infantry.
His enlistment date was the 30th of August 1916 under the unit’s name of 50th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement.
His embarkation roll number was 23/67/3. He embarked from Adelaide South Australia on board HMAT A19 Afric on 6th of November 1916
His war service was Western Front. Unfortunately, Hugh Robert Thompson was killed in action on 2nd of April 1917 at the age of 20 and was buried at Noreuil Australian Cemetery (Special Memorial C.2), France.
