Served as William Francis Zimmerman later known as William Francis Bardsley renounced the name of Zimmerman upon his return. At the time of enlisted he was secretary of the Prisoners Aid Association.

When in England he had served with the Kings Own Regiment before being invalided from active service.

Son of John Charles Bardsley and Rebecca Bardsley of Bradford, Yorkeshire, England.

Commenced return to Australia (first time) on 21 July 1917 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 18 September 1917 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
