Son of Pierre Paul E.J. Van Epen and Henrieatta Catherine Van Epen of 'Etna', Selbourne Street, Burwood, NSW. Brother of Theodore William Van Epen who returned to Australia in 1918 having served with the Australian Army Medlical Corps.
Commenced return to Australia on 8 July 1919 aboard HT Friedichsruh disembarking on 4 September 1919.

On 28 November 1918 Gerard married Kate Reeves in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Bromham, England. G.W. Spencer officiated.
