Private Ernest Allan Wood (Service No:16158) served in the Cadets for four years, and then the Militia (35th Infantry Battalion) from 1913 until he enlisted in the AIF on 10 December 1917 - appointed Driver Motor Transport. Private Wood was attached to 5th Motor Transport Section on 22 March 1918 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for London on board HMAT A54 Runic. Embarking from England for Sydney on 9 August 1919 on board HT Cermaic, Private Wood was attached to 5th Motor Transport Section at Discharge on 31 October 1919. Son Kevin served in WWII.

Ernest was born in Yorkshire, England in 1898, eldest of three children of Joe Harry Wood (b1868 in Yorkshire, England) and Annie Helena Munroe (b1872 in Yorkshire, England). Joe (a Worsted Spinner) and Annie (a Grocer's Assistant) married in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1894. Joe was a Mill Engine Tenter in 1900 when he and Annie immigrated with their son, arriving in Sydney on board the Oroya. Joe  and Annie settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Joe worked as an Engineer for Fresh Food & Ice Coy Ltd. In 1923 he was in Katoomba recuperating from a workplace accident when he died.

Ernest was working as a Motor Mechanic (May Bros) in Sydney in 1917 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, he was a Fitter in Sydney in 1922 when he married his first wife Lilian Christina Drummond (b1898 in Dipton, New Zealand)  - they separated in the mid 1930s and were divorced in 1939 (both remarried). Ernest settled in Bondi, where he worked as a Pipe Fitter, and in 1964 remarried to Merle Margery West (nee Southton; b1893 in Maclean, Clarence River, New South Wales) - Merle was a Widow living in Bondi. Ernest died in 1976 and Merle in 1977.
