Military Medal Citation reads:
For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. During the attack at BROODSEINDE on 4th October, 1917, he showed himself an excellent leader and displayed considerable initiative in meeting contingencies. On arrival at the objective he took charge of material and working parties and undertook the digging of a sap. When he found the enemy shelling depleting his garrison he resourcefully made fresh dispositions avoiding further loss and by his example and personal courage he inspired all those under his command. Later when wounded he remained on duty until physically unable to carry on.'
