The eldest of three brothers who served in the Australian Army (Jack in WWI and Malcolm in WWII) who served in the Australian Army, Private Maurice William Marnane (Service No:869) enlisted in the AIF on 8 April 1915, and was attached to 11th Light Horse Regiment on 20 August 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Suez on board HMAT A9 Shropshire. Private Marnane, ill with Dysentry, was evacuated in November 1915 from hospital in Malta to hospital in England before returning to Egypt to rejoin his Unit. On 25 September 1918 Private Marnane was WiA (GSW to left arm and back), and embarked from Suez on 2 January 1919 for the RTA on board HT Aneas. Private Marnane was attached to 11th Light Horse Regiment at Discharge on 28 August 1919.
Maurice (aka Far) was born in Herberton QLD in 1894, eldest of four children (sons) of William Marnane (b1848 in Singleton, New South Wales) and Elizabeth (Bessie) Kerr McLuckie (b1865 in Glasgow, Scotland). William was a Farmer in Morpeth NSW before moving to Cooktown in 1872 and working as a Prospector and Storekeeper at the Palmer Goldfields and the Tait Diggings. With his brother, he used pack mules and horses to transport tin concentrates from the Diggings to Cairns, and provisions back to Port Douglas and the Mines. William and Bessie married in 1893 in Cairns, where they settled and raised their family and William was a Farmer. Both William and Bessie were active in their local community - Bessie was President of the Atherton Ladies Defence League, and William was a member of the Cairns Harbor Board and of the Tinaroo Divisional Board, served as Chairman of the Tinaroo Shire Council, and was a prime mover in the establishment of a dairy industry in the Atherton region.
Maurice was a Farmer in Atherton in 1915 when he enlisted in the Army, returning to Atherton following his Discharge. In 1926 in Sydney he married Margaret (Maidie) Isabel Linedale (b1893 in Irvinebank, QLD). Maurice and Maidie settled in Atherton, where they raised their family and Maurice was a Farmer until his death in 1961. Maiddie died in 1967.
