2nd Lt. Rowland Harcourt Richardson was shot down and captured on the 6 October, 1917. He was serving with 102 Squadron RFC at the time, flying two-seater RE8’s. He did not return from a night bombing mission. His observer 2nd Lt. CE Carroll was also captured. He was repatriated to England on 2 January 1919. Richardson had enlisted in the AIF as a 20-year-old in July 1915, and served mainly as a nurse, and in 1916 accompanied a hospital ship on its return to Australia before arriving back in England with the 3rd Division Supply Column and transferring to the RFC in March 1917. He also served in the Australian Army during WW2, enlisting at 46 years of age.
