He served in the 60th Battalion, Australian Infantry AIF. Service Number 565. He was born at Haverhill, England in 1894. He enlisted at Bendigo, Victoria in 1916. He embarked from Melbourne for Plymouth per the H.M.A.T. "Runic," on the 20th of June 1916. He proceeded to Etaples in France on the 16th of September, 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal in the field on the 18th of January 1917 then to Corporal on the 19th of February. He received gun shot wounds to the back in battle on the 12th of May 1917. He died of his wounds on the 14th of May 1917.

He is remembered on the grave of his late father, James and his mother, Alice Humphrey at Haverhill, Suffolk.
