Private James McMahon (Service No:51643) enlisted in the AIF on 25 February 1918 at Broadmeadows Camp and was attached to 3rd General (Victoria) Reinforcements when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Liverpool on board RMS Orontes on 3 June 1918. Private McMahon served with 9th Training Battalion and was hospitalised with pneumonia (seriously ill) at Fovant Military Hospital in Salisbury, England on 6 November 1918. Private McMahon embarked from England for Melbourne on 20 December 1918 on board the Orontes and was attached to 39th Infantry Batttalion at Discharge (medically unfit) on 26 June 1919. Brother Ernest served with the AIF in WWI and the ACMF in WWII, Frank served with the RAN and Robert served with the AF in WWII. Son Hubert served in WWII.
James was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1899, eighth of twelve children on Michael Thomas McMahon (b1864 in Burrumbeet, Victoria) and Margaret (Maggie) Piper (b1871 in Melbourne, Victoria). Michael (a Labourer) and Maggie (a Domestic Servant) married in 1887 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Michael worked as a Quarryman and Labourer.
James completed an apprenticeship with Edwards and Coy in Melbourne, and was working as a Boot Clicker when he enlisted in the AIF. In 1919 in Melbourne, James married Elsie May Scott (b1899 in Melbourne, Victoria) - they divorced in the early 1920s. James settled in Melbourne, where he worked as a Boot Clicker, Driver and Wool Classer. James died in 1975.
