Patrick was the son of Patrick Joseph O'Brien and his wife Margaret O'Brien. He enlisted in August 1915. On his return he married Florence Evelyn O'Brien (maiden name as well as married name). Florence worked at the Moreton Bay Hotel and lived in one of the rooms in the hotel before her marriage to Patrick in 1920. The couple lived in Redcliffe for some time after the war.
